Historiquement, la paix a essentiellement été étudiée par le biais de ses traités. À partir des années 1950, les études de la paix (peace studies) réinterprétent la définition de la paix et de la violence : il ne s’agit plus de considérer la paix comme la simple absence de conflit mais de dénoncer les inégalités sociales et économiques qui mettent en péril une forme plus compréhensive de paix.
